flagstaff

what. lighthouse seen (September 2019)

where. Fort Canning Hill, Singapore

remarks. This is a replica of the original flagstaff that stood on the original site, where it was used to signal ships coming into the harbour of Singapore. The original was constructed in 1822; the date of the re-construction is unknown; but possibly 2007, when the nearby Fort Canning Lighthouse was re-constructed.

note. Malay for lighthouse: rumah api; Mandarin Chinese for lighthouse: 灯塔 (simplified script; dēngtǎ), 燈塔 (traditional script; dēngtǎ); Tamil for lighthouse: கலங்கரை விளக்கம் (kalaṅkarai viḷakkam)

old shinko no. 5 pier signal tower

other names. Kobe Harbor Signal Tower

what. lighthouse seen (December 2014, June 2023)

where. Kobe Harborland, Kobe, Hyogo, Japan

remarks. More often referred to as a signal tower rather than a lighthouse, it is unlikely to have had functioned as a lighthouse. It was moved to its current site in 1992, after having been retired from use in 1990. The first photograph shows the lighthouse as seen from the Kobe Port Tower.

note. Japanese for lighthouse: 灯台 (tōdai)
