clifford pier red lantern; postcard, unused: singapore

what. unused postcard with lighthouse

where. Clifford Pier, Singapore

remarks. The original pier on the site of the current Clifford Pier was the Johnston's Pier, opened in 1856. Johnston’s Pier was also affectionately known as Ang Teng Beh Tau (in Hokkien), which means “red lamp harbour”, in reference to the red lantern hung at the end of the pier that served as a warning for incoming sea-faring vessels. In 1927, construction work began on the Clifford Pier nearby, and it was officially opened in 1933, to replace Johnston's Pier. Its colloquial name of Ang Teng Beh Tau was also applied to this new structure.

Today, the Clifford Pier building no longer serves its original function. It was closed in 2006 and was converted into a restaurant. Today, it is part of the Fullerton Bay Hotel. In commemoration of its earlier colloquial name, two red lamps of about 1m-high have been installed at the sea-facing side of the building. It is unclear if they were meant to be replicas of the original red lanterns; nonetheless, they appear to be faux lighthouses. The postcard shows one of these lanterns on its right side.

fullerton lighthouse; stamps: singapore, 2019

what. stamps with former lighthouse tower

where. Fullerton Hotel, Singapore

issue information. 1 value of set of 6 stamps, issued to commemorate heritage hotels in Singapore. All stamps in the series feature regular as well as self-adhesive versions.

remarks. The Fullerton Lighthouse was a lighthouse fitted atop the then-General Post Office at Fullerton Building in 1958, replacing the Fort Canning Lighthouse. However, its function as a lighthouse became increasing limited due to the growing height of the Singapore skyline. Hence, it was eventually decommissioned in 1978. Fullerton Building is now a hotel, The Fullerton Hotel, and the tower upon which the lantern sat is now a restaurant named, appropriately, The Lighthouse.

note. Malay for lighthouse: rumah api; Mandarin Chinese for lighthouse: 灯塔 (simplified script; dēngtǎ), 燈塔 (traditional script; dēngtǎ); Tamil for lighthouse: கலங்கரை விளக்கம் (kalaṅkarai viḷakkam)

what. buoys seen (06 February 2019)

where. Marina Bay, Singapore

remarks. A series of yellow buoys in Marina Bay, in the stretch separating Gardens by the Bay East and West, just before the Marina Barrage. In the direction towards the Marina Barrage, a row of 5 buoys can be seen. The first, third and last buoys have signs on them on their fronts and backs: "DANGER CAUTION TO ALL BOATERS BARRAGE DOWNSTREAM BOATS PROHIBITED BEYOND BUOYED EXCLUSION ZONE 300m DOWNSTREAM", while the second and the fourth have a sign on them that says: "NO ENTRY".

Nearer to Marina Barrage, another series of barriers can be seen. This series is composed of 3 bigger yellow buoys, 7 smaller yellow buoys, and some floating barriers. Of the bigger buoys, the one nearest to the shore on the side of Gardens by the Bay West has a sign that says: "DANGER NO ENTRY". While the other two bigger yellow buoys also bear signs, it is unclear what the signs say. Printed on both sides of each of the 7 smaller buoys are the words: "KEEP OUT".

The first three photographs were taken from the shore where the Marina Barrage building is located while the last was taken from the Marina Barrage.
