remarks. In Edo Period Japan, a series of 5 centrally-administered routes emanated from Edo (present-day Tokyo), the capital to outlying provinces. One of these was the Tokaido (or, Eastern Sea Road), which was located along the sea coast of eastern Honshu. The 41st stop of this route is in today's Atsuta Ward of Nagoya city. Between this stop and the next was a distance of 7 ri (equivalent to 27km), covered by boats. The site of this stop is hence also referred to as Shichiri (i.e., Seven Ri) (1). According to a signboard on-site, a lighthouse was built on the site in 1625; however, it was burnt down in 1791. In 1955, the replica now seen was built on the same site in 1955.
note. Japanese for lighthouse: 灯台 (tōdai)
